Double

Smolka Contemporary is pleased to invite you to the opening of the exhibition Double by Alois Mosbacher on March 14th!

Opening
Tuesday, 14 March 2023, 6 – 8 pm

Double takes place on the occasion of the major retrospective of Alois Mosbacher at Belvedere 21, which opens on 9 March and runs until 10 September 2023.

About the exhibition
For over forty years, Alois Mosbacher has been painting his universe of flora and fauna. An abstract fairy tale in a representational setting. A figurative pictorial space in which tension is usually created without any figures at all. Always new motifs have been mixed in. For example, Mosbacher playfully lets a basketball roll into the picture. Mosbacher’s large-format paintings and drawings transform leaves, blossoms, branches and all kinds of everyday objects into sculptural landscapes.

In the exhibition Palinops at Belvedere 21, Alois Mosbacher has created a unique artistic biotope. On display are figurative works, landscapes and still lifes from various periods. Visitors are not given a specific direction. Alois Mosbacher sees the exhibition space as an accessible stage on which one can discover narratives and interpretations on and between the pictures.

Parallel to this large retrospective, the traces of this journey of discovery continue in our gallery at Lobkowitzplatz. Recurring elements can be discovered here as well as there. Nature, especially the forest, is a constant in his work, which he knows how to stage anew again and again. Alois Mosbacher depicts the ordinary in unusual constellations and thus seduces us into another world, his own mysterious world of images.

Alois Mosbacher was born in 1954 in Strallegg, Styria. He lives and works in Vienna and Lower Austria.
