Astoria Artshow 2026

Smolka Contemporary is pleased to announce our participation in the Astoria Artshow with a solo presentation by Hans Kupelwieser in the ‘Main’ section.

Driven by the question to what extent a material can be altered or transformed through “guided coincidence”, Hans Kupelwieser works with industrial materials such as stainless steel and Plexiglas using a variety of methods. The result of these controlled experiments are objects – compressed, folded or cut into blocks – through which he explores the boundaries between chance and artistic intervention, demonstrating that every object can take on different forms. Thanks to their reflective surfaces, the sculptures made of polished stainless steel, also enter into a dialogue with their surroundings.

The work of Hans Kupelwieser (born 1948, Lunz am See, Lower Austria) is characterised by a use of various media and materials. Kupelwieser is constantly exploring the limits of technical possibilities and genre conventions, whilst engaging with questions of perception and illusion. The tension between two- and three-dimensionality is a recurring theme in his work. Kupelwieser studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and was a professor at Graz University of Technology. He lives and works in Vienna and Lower Austria.
