Hubert Schmalix is known for his luminescent, often idealized landscapes, but also for nudes, flowers, and cityscapes. In the 1980s, he rose to prominence as a “Young Wild One” (New Painting) with an expressive, gestural style. Over the years, and after his move to the Philippines and later to Los Angeles, he developed a contemplative, reduced formal vocabulary.
